Computer Will Not Power On

The computer will not respond at all to power button being pressed (screen doesn’t change and no lights flicker on)

The first thing you should do is make sure your computer is plugged into the wall and its charging light is on. If the charging light doesn’t turn on and you know the outlet your using works then it is most likely that your power adapter is just broken and you need to buy a new one.

If the charging light does turn on and the computer can boot with the adapter plugged in, but it shuts off not long (or immediately) after it gets unplugged then your battery is either at the end of its life or broken and either way you’ll need to replace it. If your screen is speckled with off color square dots or even if there are many such dots together forming more of an off color blotch but they do not form single-colored lines across the screen then it is likely your screen has “dead pixels”. If this is the case and your computer is still under warranty then your manufacturer might give you a free screen replacement! But you should know that some manufacturers require that a certain number of pixels--maybe 15 or so--be dead before they will do this. If you’re manufacturer won’t cover the repair, then you should first buy a replacement screen as mentioned above, then follow this guide to perform the replacement.

Computer Freezes Or Slows Dramatically

Computer freezes or slows to a crawl while running especially during resource heavy tasks

If your computer slows dramatically or freezes during memory intensive tasks, then it is likely that your computer doesn’t have sufficient RAM. To check if this is the case you can check your task manager when things slow down and check the amount of free memory (RAM) that you have. If it is close to nothing then that means you need to install additional RAM (note: this may involve removing and discarding old smaller RAM sticks).

If your computer slows down dramatically especially after running for a little while, but not necessarily that long, then it is likely that your processors are overheating. This could be because your cooling fans need to be cleaned one the best ways to fix this is to use a can of compressed air to blow the dust out of your computer’s fans.

Computer Won’t Boot

Every computer has the hard drive inside. Hard disk is the main storage medium for computers.

So it is easy to have an error on it. When user turn on the computer but it didn’t walk in a normal way to the Windows system but stuck in one steps before seeing the logo. When meet this problem, you need to get a Windows reboot diskette, it should be a DVD fit for the Windows version you have. It should be given in the case when you get the computer. Insert DVD into CD-ROM And restart the computer. Boot to the DVD, and choose “Repair your computer,” then click next. On this screen, pick “Startup Repair” and let it run. It will guide the system boot correctly.

If your computer still does not boot correctly or still have other issues, you may need to replace your hard drive.

If the ‘ON’ light is lit, and the fan is spinning, as well as HDD activity and it just show a blank screen or a blue screen, your CPU might be bad. If your computer's optical drive does not open or does not read CD's or DVD's, the optical drive may be broken and needs to be replaced.

Audio Problems

The audio coming from your computer is either distorted or not playing at all

Check the audio coming from the headphones against the audio coming from the speakers. If the speakers give a clearer sound than the headphones, then either the audio jack or even the headphones themselves, may be faulty. If the audio cuts in and out often when using headphones, then this might be the sign of a loose audio jack, which means that you would have to make sure that it is safely inserted into the computer completely.

If the audio problem is coming through the speakers, then the laptop's driver might be the wrong version, installed incorrectly or corrupt. Follow this link Here to find a driver for your computer. Make sure that it the right model, 'Acer Aspire 5740' and go to the 'Audio' drivers and download the most recent one. Go to Control Panel -> Device Manager -> Sound Controllers.
