Civics & Economics covers the course material in greater complexity, novelty, acceleration and/or pacing, and reflects a differentiated curriculum. Honors students should learn to express and defend their ideas while learning to accept constructive criticism with maturity.
I will incorporate opportunities for students to become reflective thinkers who possess the potential to put their learning and accomplishments into useful practice. I also hope to explore areas of interest within the designated course of study that have real-life meaning.
Honor Civics and Economics is distinguished by a difference in the quality of the work expected, not merely an increase in quantity. This course has a mandatory MSL (Measures of Student Learning) final exam that will count a percentage of the final grade as determined by the school district or the State of North Carolina.
A.Notebooks: Each student will need a binder to keep all notes and important papers properly organized. Those who fail to read, take notes and keep organized will struggle in the class. Notebooks are checked at the end of each unit
B.Tests: Test grades comprise 40% of the student’s grade. Tests are generally handed back the next class period. Each test will be discussed and reviewed. The tests will then be collected and filed in the student’s folder.
C.Daily Work: Daily grades comprise 30% of the student’s grade. This grade includes all classwork and any other class work assigned throughout the nine weeks.
D.Quizzes: Vocabulary Quiz grades make up the remaining 30% of the student’s grade. The majority of the quizzes will be vocabulary quizzes. Some will be homework quizzes to make sure the students have read appropriate materials.
II.Course Expectations
A.Class Rules:
1.Do your best every day!
2.Respect yourself and others.
3.Be in your seat WHEN the tardy bell rings.
4.Dismissal is by the teacher—NOT THE BELL! Be in a seat until dismissed.
B.School Rules: All school rules are in enforced in the classroom. Please follow the policies that are in place to avoid conflict.
C.State Rules: Civics & Economics is required of all students who wish to graduate in North Carolina. All students are encouraged to get off to a good start and stay focused. A failing grade is not negotiable! Students may not be exempt from the state’s final exam.

D.Make Up Work: When a student returns from an absence, they should complete any missed assignment within five days. Tests and quizzes may be made up during lunch, free periods, after school and in some cases the teacher may offer class time to make them up. Make up work is the student’s responsibility!
E.Late Work: There will be times when a student doesn’t have assignments in on time. If for any reason a student misses an assignment there will be a letter grade deduction for each day the assignment is late unless arrangements are made with the teacher. Also no work will be accepted after two weeks has passed from the assignment due date.
F.Parent Communication:Progress reports are posted every 4.5 weeks via school technology. Parents have access through PowerSchool as well. If there are concerns about a student’s grade, the teacher is the person to contact first.
